Research brief | AI, sustainability & manufacturing

AI is changing how things are made. The opportunity is in applying it well.

Adoption is rising, but the strongest outcomes come from combining AI with process knowledge, reliable data and human judgment.

Workers globally are in occupations with some GenAI exposure; 3.3% are in the highest exposure group. The ILO finds job transformation more likely than full automation.

ILO, 2025 occupational exposure study

Where sustainability meets AI: Deloitte respondents reported 10-20% average net improvement in production output and 7-20% in employee productivity after smart-manufacturing initiatives. These are self-reported smart-manufacturing results, not AI-only effects. Fraunhofer research explores AI use cases, digital twins and energy monitoring in production; energy and material impacts still need to be measured for each process.

What this means for professional services: The ILO cautions against equating exposure with job loss. The World Economic Forum reports 40% of surveyed employers expect workforce reductions where AI can automate tasks, while 50% plan to move staff from declining to growing roles. Services in implementation, energy and materials measurement, supplier decisions, governance and workforce upskilling can help manufacturers make that transition.
